It may be pitch black, but in the scant moonlight their outlines show. I take a step back, more to have a better view of both of them than from fear, and steady the gun with my other hand.

They hesitate and trade a look with each other.

The little voice in my head assures me they’re going to attack me. It lasts for a fraction of a second. They are! A wave of adrenaline floods my body.

BANG!

The shot startles me. The flash leaves bright white and yellow spots in my field of view, and blinking them away doesn’t work.

Something stirs inside me. I feel lighter, as if a weight is lifted from me, like something lodged inside me is out and then … emptiness.

My instincts tell me there’s an entity behind me. A guttural growl pierces the night. Not far from me, another dark shape rises and answers the monstrous call.

One of the thugs screams.

Oh my God! I’m going to—


Unfortunately, your character died. You made the wrong choice. If you have read my novel, The Darkening, you know why. If not, I’ll give you a hint: it has to do with the flash from the gunshot. The Darkening claimed you, like it claimed more than ninety per cent of the Earth’s population. I urge you to play again, but this time make a different choice. Only one answer will have the potential to lead your character to surviving a little longer. Nothing is certain in the world of The Darkening. There are many more ways one can die from in that world than I have showed you here. I explore some of them in my novel.
